If you ask any backpacker, tuk-tuk driver, or hotel receptionist where to go on a Friday night in Trincomalee, they will all give you the same answer: Fernando’s.
Located right on the sands of Uppuveli Beach, Fernando’s Bar isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an institution. It is the unofficial meeting point for every traveler on the East Coast.
Whether you are looking for a cold beer after a dive, a romantic dinner under the stars, or a place to dance barefoot in the sand, this is the heartbeat of Trinco’s nightlife. Here is why you need to spend an evening here.

The Vibe: Shoes Optional
The first thing you notice is the dress code: there isn’t one.
Fernando’s captures the essence of island life. The furniture is made of driftwood, there are hammocks strung between the palms, and colorful bean bags are scattered right down to the water’s edge.
During the day, it is a chill spot to read a book and grab a burger. But as the sun goes down, the volume goes up. The playlist shifts from Bob Marley to deep house and pop, the fairy lights turn on, and the beach fills up with travelers from all over the world sharing travel stories.

The Drinks: Cold Lions and Arrack Sours
You are in Sri Lanka, so you have to drink like a local.
- Lion Lager: There is nothing quite like a massive, condensation-covered bottle of Lion Beer ($3) when your feet are buried in the sand.
- Arrack Sour: If you want a cocktail, try this. Made from local coconut spirit (Arrack) and lime, it is dangerous but delicious.
- Fresh Juices: If you are alcohol-free, their Pineapple and Passion Fruit juices are squeezed fresh to order.
The Food: Seafood Platters & Bar Snacks
While it is famous as a bar, the kitchen punches above its weight.
The Signature Dish: The Seafood Platter. It is a towering pile of grilled prawns, calamari, fish, and fries. It is designed to be messy and shared between two people.
If you want something smaller, their Devilled Chicken (spicy stir-fry) or Calamari Rings make perfect bar snacks to keep you going through the night.

The Sunset Ritual
Trincomalee faces East, which means you watch the sunrise over the ocean, not the sunset. However, the "Golden Hour" at Fernando’s is spectacular. Because the sun sets behind the land, the sky over the ocean turns incredible shades of pastel pink, violet, and deep blue.
The Best Time to Arrive: Get there at 5:00 PM. Grab a bean bag in the front row. Order your drinks during their "Happy Hour" (often available before 7 PM), and watch the fishing boats heading out for their night catch as the sky changes color.
Weekend Fire Shows
If you visit on a Friday or Saturday night during the peak season (June–August), you are in for a show. They often light a massive bonfire on the beach and host Fire Dancers. Watching the flames spin against the dark ocean backdrop is the perfect end to a Trinco holiday.
Our Final Verdict
Fernando’s isn't fine dining. The service can be slow when it’s crowded because everyone is on "island time."
But that’s the point. You don’t go to Fernando’s to rush. You go there to realize that you are sitting on a tropical beach, drinking a cold beer, and you have absolutely nowhere else you need to be.
