Waking up in Trincomalee is different. The sun is already blazing by 7:00 AM, the ocean is calm, and you are hungry.
But what’s on the menu?
Trincomalee offers a tale of two breakfasts. On one side of the street, you have the spicy, steaming, flavor-packed Tamil breakfast of the locals. On the other side, a growing number of chic cafes are finally serving the one thing travelers miss most: Real coffee.
Whether you want to eat like a local for $1 or enjoy Avocado Toast by the beach, here is your morning guide.

1. The Local Choice: String Hoppers & Dosa
If you want to power your day like a Sri Lankan, skip the cereal. In the East Coast, breakfast is savory.
Where to go: Look for any signboard that says "Saivar Hotel" (Vegetarian Restaurant) or just head to the bustling New Parrot Restaurant in town.
What to order:
- String Hoppers (Idiyappam): These are steamed rice noodle nests. They are light and fluffy. You eat them with Kiri Hodi (coconut milk gravy) and Pol Sambol (spicy coconut).
- Dosa (Thosai): A crispy, fermented crepe made from rice and lentils. In Trinco, they serve it on a metal tray with three different chutneys and a bowl of Sambar.
- The Cost: Incredibly cheap. A full belly will cost you less than 500 LKR ($1.50 USD).

2. The Western Fix: Coffee & Cafe Culture
A few years ago, finding a cappuccino in Trincomalee was impossible. Thankfully, times have changed.
Where to go:
- Cafe on the 18th (Uppuveli): This is the undisputed champion of Trinco cafe culture. It has AC, Wi-Fi, and a polished industrial interior.
- What to order: Their Espresso-based coffee is legitimate. Pair it with their pancakes, smoothie bowls, or a classic big breakfast with sausages and eggs.
- Aqua (Trinco Blu Hotel): If you want breakfast with a view, head here. It’s slightly pricier, but sitting on the wooden deck watching the waves while eating an omelet is hard to beat.

3. The "On-the-Go" Option: Short Eats
If you are rushing to catch a whale-watching boat or a bus, you need speed.
Where to go: Any bakery or "Pastry Shop" in town. What to order:
- Fish Rolls: Deep-fried pancakes filled with spicy canned fish and potatoes.
- Vegetable Roti: A spicy triangle of flatbread folded over a curry filling.
- Malu Paan (Fish Bun): The classic triangular bun found everywhere in the island.

A Note on "Hoppers"
You might be looking for the bowl-shaped Egg Hoppers (Appa).
- Note: While tourists love them for breakfast, in Sri Lanka, hoppers are traditionally a dinner food! You might find them in hotels in the morning, but local shops usually only start making them after 5:00 PM. Stick to String Hoppers for the authentic morning experience.
Our Final Verdict
Our advice? Mix it up. Go to Cafe on the 18th when you are craving home comforts and caffeine. But at least once, wake up early, sit on a plastic chair at a Saivar shop, and eat a Dosa with your hands. The spice wakes you up faster than coffee ever could.
